What are Muddy Buddies?

I’ve always called this tasty treat Muddy Buddies and recently discovered it’s also known as Puppy Chow or Monkey Munch. It is the perfect combination of chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar. You can buy it prepackaged but I believe making it at home is the best!

Origin of Muddy Buddies

Though nobody knows for sure who came up with it, Muddy Buddies are thought to have originated in the U.S. around the 1950s or 1960s. They started out as a recipe featured on the Chex cereal box. Over time, they became really popular as an easy and yummy homemade snack, especially during the holidays.

Lets make it

This treat is super easy to make and perfect for parties or sharing with friends. I absolutely love it, especially during the holidays. It’s just so cozy and makes such a sweet gift.

Ingredients

  • Chex Cereal: I used a mix of rice Chex and corn Chex but use whatever is best available to you! To me the type doesn’t really change the flavor of it. i ended up using about 2 boxes of Chex mix or 8 to 9 cups.
  • Semisweet Chocolate Chips
  • Butter
  • Peanut Butter: Smooth Peanut butter is the best!
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Powdered Sugar: To be honest I didn’t really measure but it ends up being about 1 1/2 cups to 2 cups.

Tips/Tricks

  • I like to add the powdered sugar into gallon bags maybe 1/2 cup at a time then add your chocolate covered Chex and shake bag until it is all covered. Either adding more powered sugar or Chex (depending on which is needed).
  • They can stay fresh for up to 1 week store in room temp and air tight container or up to 2 months in the freezer.

You won’t regret making these for family and friends! They are sure to love them and come back wanting more! Personally, I enjoy packing these treats for Christmas goodie bags; they are the perfect treat and so easy to make in bulk.
